Ensuring that our pupils have access to high levels of ICT skills

Pupils are encouraged to use a range of ICT when choosing how to present independent work. They have access to many platforms including; Hwb, J2E, Seesaw, Google Classroom and Microsoft Office plus a variety of apps on the iPads. Foundation Phase staff mostly use J2E and Seesaw to support learning.
Key Stage 2 staff mostly use Google Classroom and Seesaw.

Each classroom has a set of laptops and iPads that the pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for. The digital champion pupil voice committee representatives in each class should let the ICT lead or ICT technician know about any damages or malfunctions as soon as possible.

The school has an ICT suite with a set of class PC’s. The suite is available to book sessions in using the timetable on the back of the door but can be used anytime by KS2 pupils when it is free. Pupils should always be monitored/supervised when using computers.

The school has two green screen rooms, one for KS2 and one for FP pupils. The pupils are encouraged to prepare what they want to do in the green screen rooms before entering so that the rooms are used effectively and efficiently. Pupils and staff should be aware of noise levels near these rooms when recording is taking pace.

The ICT lead attends termly ‘Primary Digital’ meetings and shares the content and any updates with staff. However due to the ever-changing nature of ICT, all staff are encouraged to share good ICT practice during staff meetings whenever possible.

Safer Internet Day is celebrated as a whole school every year, but pupils should be constantly reminded of the importance of this throughout the year. Each class has a digital guardian displayed to remind the pupils to think carefully about every click when online.

The ICT lead will listen to learners once a year to establish any potential gaps in the DCF skills and will help to support staff and pupils with this.

Technical support is available once a week when the BCBC technician attends our school. ICT support, including password support, is available from the ICT lead any time outside of lesson time.

DCF (Digital Competence Framework)

The digital Competence Framework for Wales can be found via the Hwb platform.

https://hwb.gov.wales/curriculum-for-wales/cross-curricular-skills-frameworks/

The framework is now structured with the skills in progression steps in line with the new Curriculum for Wales.

The DCF is a cross curricular framework and is not a programme of study for ICT or Computer Science. It is the responsibility of all practitioners and teachers to include DCF skills within their lessons, throughout the year.

Staff should be familiar with the four strands of the DCF and the elements within each strand:

  • Citizenship
-Identity, image and reputation
-Health and well-being
-Digital rights, licencing and ownership
-Online behaviour and cyberbullying

  • Interacting and Collaborating
-Communication
-Collaboration
-Storing and sharing

  • Producing
-Planning, sourcing and searching
-Creating
-Evaluating and improving

  • Data and Computational Thinking
-Problem solving and modelling
-Data and information literacy
